Everything about German Lotto 6/49

How does German Lotto 6/49 work?

In Germany, we also refer to Lotto 6aus49 as Lotto on Wednesday and Lotto on Saturday, and this is how it works:

The formula for playing Lotto is 6 out of 49 plus 1 of 10 super numbers. A Lotto ticket costs €1.20 plus the ticket fee, regardless of whether you play online or in a lottery kiosk. Six numbers must be marked in each field of the ticket. The super number results from the last number on the ticket, i.e. a number between 0 and 9.

How high is the current lottery jackpot?

The current jackpot of the German Lotto 6/49 is 16 Mio. Euro

The Lotto 6/49 jackpot in Germany is not tied to a fixed minimum amount. If the jackpot is won, it usually starts at one to two million euros on Wednesdays and three or four million euros on Saturdays.

If the Lotto jackpot is not won over several draws, it can rise to a maximum of 50 million euros. Once the Lotto jackpot has reached its maximum amount and no winner has been found in the 1st prize category, the surplus winnings are carried over to the start of the next jackpot phase.

The 50 million euros will therefore remain available until the 6 winning numbers plus the super number are drawn. This means that in future there will be several draws in which you can try your luck for the top jackpot. This also means that the Lotto jackpot can only be won with six correct numbers plus a super number.

In the meantime, the payout amounts above the maximum jackpot flow into the next jackpot phase. In short: once the 50 million is gone, the next round starts with a significantly higher jackpot than before.

When is the Lotto draw on Wednesday and Saturday?

The draw on Wednesday is always at 18:35 CET and on Saturday at 19:35 CET. The winning numbers are published on Wednesdays at 19:00 and Saturdays at 20:00.

When are the lottery odds published?

The odds for the individual lottery prize categories are announced on the following workday after the draw. So, for the Lotto on Wednesday the odds are published on Thursday and for the Lotto on Saturday the odds are published on Monday.

What do you win with 3 or 4 correct numbers in the Lotto?

In a draw, a super number between 0 and 9 is determined in addition to the 6 winning numbers. The super number is the last digit of the ticket number.

How Lotto 6aus49 developed in Germany

09.10.1955
The first 6 out of 49 Lotto winning numbers were drawn in Germany using a drum still made of wood and glass. The first winning number drawn was 13, which for years was one of the least frequently drawn winning numbers.

17.05.1956
The additional number is introduced.

04.10.1956
Probably to prevent gambling addiction, the 1st prize tier is limited to DM 500,000.

07.10.1962
An additional prize category with 5 correct numbers plus an additional number is introduced.

04.09.1965
The first Lotto draw is broadcast live on ARD television.

11.07.1974
The 1st prize tier is raised to DM 1,500,000.

16.07.1981
By doubling the stakes and the odds, the upper prize limit for LOTTO 6aus49 is raised to DM 3,000,000 and for Spiel 77 to DM 3.55 million.

28.04.1982
The Wednesday Lotto is changed to a new game formula 7 out of 38.

1.06.1985
The upper prize limit is abolished, paving the way for the first big Lotto jackpot.

04.06.1986
Lotto on Wednesday is switched back to the 6 out of 49 formula, but there are two draws on Wednesday, Draw A and Draw B, each with 6 and an additional number.

07.12.1991
The 1st prize category in LOTTO 6 aus 49 is expanded to include the Super Number.

02.12.2000
Lotto on Wednesday and Lotto on Saturday are merged in such a way that the jackpot is transferred from one draw to the other as a so-called rolling jackpot. This allows the Lotto jackpot to increase more quickly. If the jackpot is not won in the course of 12 draws, the compulsory payout is made in the 13th draw, possibly also to the 2nd prize tier.

07.10.2006
The highest single prize in the history of German LOTTO 6aus49 is won with almost 37.7 million euros.

05.12.2007
After the compulsory payout in the 13th draw, the highest Lotto jackpot in the history of German LOTTO 6aus49 is achieved with 45.3 million euros. However, this jackpot was shared by three players from different German states.

04.05.2013
The additional number is replaced by the super number in all prize categories. At the same time, prize category 9 (2 correct numbers plus super number) is added.

23.09.2020
The prize schedule is changed and a ticket now costs €1.20. As a result, the Lotto jackpot is set to grow even faster and sixes without a super number are set to win millions more often. If the jackpot reaches €45 million, it will definitely be paid out.

05.11.2023
The jackpot can rise to €50 million. And the so-called definitive payout when the maximum jackpot is reached has been abolished. In addition, all payout amounts that exceed the maximum jackpot remain in prize category 1. These are added to prize category 1 in the first draw after winning the maximum jackpot. After the maximum jackpot has been won, the next jackpot phase therefore starts with an already higher jackpot in prize category 1.

Lotto is a game of chance - even with a system.
To ensure that the game remains a game, it is essential to play responsibly. Only play if you can accept the risk of losing your stakes. Chance of winning the jackpot: 1 in 140 million.
